Body and Ear Piercings

What to do:

  • Always wash hands before touching or cleaning the piercing.

  • Keep clothing and bedding clean.

  • Take showers instead of baths.

  • Wash piercing after using make-up, hair products lotions or perfumes.

What to avoid:

  • Rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, anti-biotic ointments, pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers and oceans.

What to use:

Choose 1 method and stick with it

 

Antibacterial or antimicrobial soap (Dial, Provon.)

  • Wash 2 or 3 times daily.

  • Wash hands for 30 seconds.

  • Wash piercing and jewelry to clean away “crusties.”

  • Rinse all soap from the piercing and jewelry with clean water.

Sea Salt Spray (H2ocaean piercing aftercare spray, Saline wound wash.)

  • Use spray 3 or 4 times a day.

  • Spray piercing with small amount of sea salt spray to moisten skin.

  • Spray cotton swab and clean “crusties” from the piercing.

  • Spray piercing one more time and allow to soak into the piercing.

 

Oral Piercings

What to do:

  • Take small bites and chew thoroughly.

  • Purchase a new toothbrush.

  • Hold cold water in your mouth for a minute (repeat and needed) to help with swelling and tenderness.

  • Take ibuprofen for tenderness and swelling.

What to avoid:

  • Alcohol, open mouth kissing, oral sex, smoking, chewing gum, chewing tobacco, mouthwash with alcohol.

What to use:

Biotene mouth wash

  • Rinse with mouthwash for 30 seconds after consuming food, drinking or smoking.

 

What might happen with your healing piercing.

  • “Crusties” are normal, and are usually white to dark yellow in color.

  • There might be some blood in the “crusties” the first couple of days.

  • Some swelling, discoloration, tenderness and bruising.

 

Things to remember

  • Never touch the piercing with dirty hands.

  • Piercings will benefit from being left in longer prior to changing for the first time (6-8 weeks).

  • Please follow the advice of a Piercer not your friends.

  • Purchase only quality body jewelry.

  • Never remove the jewelry from an infected piercing, the body will naturally close the piercing and trap infection inside.
